Stroke is one of the most common diseases in western countries: It is the third leading cause of death after cardiovascular diseases and cancer. Moreover, stroke is the leading cause of palsy acquired in adulthood. In Germany, 200.000 to 250.000 incidents are assumed to occur each year. Despite some advances in the comprehension of the pathophysiology and some promising therapeutical approaches (e.g. thrombolysis), the situation in stroke therapy is still unsatisfactory. More than 95 % of stroke patients can only be treated supportively, but not specifically.
